Corrado has looked after my mare since I bought her (4 yrs ago) and has been fantastic... always available, reliable and professional. Would recommend 100%!

Fully recommend this practice after receiving an excellent service throughout my horse’s recent recovery from a check ligament injury. Corrado talked me through each scan, so I could understand what I was looking at and see the improvements for myself and his advice at each stage of the rehab process has been spot on. So much so that my horse has made a full recovery and is back competing at his previous level and the leg looks fantastic

Highly recommend Surrey Hills. I rang Corrado and he was happy to chat things through with me on a new horse that we wanted vetted. Never felt rushed through our phone chat and he answered all my questions and concerns. The horse was vetted on the same day I had rang so a very quick service. Thanks again Surrey Hills

Do you need an equine dentist in Farnborough, Aldershot, or Frimley?

All horses need to undergo routine dental examinations, with most requiring tooth rasping annually. This practice is vital for eliminating sharp edges that can cause painful cheek ulceration and ensuring all teeth are correctly aligned to facilitate efficient chewing.

Regular dental checks by a qualified horse dentist are of utmost importance for maintaining optimal dental health, as they are for humans. Dental discomfort often goes unnoticed in horses, leading to issues such as poor performance, weight loss, and behavioural changes.

Left untreated, dental problems can escalate into more severe issues. Horses naturally tend not to display dental pain, making thorough examinations essential for detecting any underlying tooth problems. In many cases, mild sedation is required for most horses to undergo a thorough inspection, enabling a comprehensive assessment that would otherwise be difficult.

Thorough horse vettings in Farnborough, Ash Vale, or Mytchett

Purchasing a horse can pose challenges, requiring confidence in selecting one suitable for your skill level and needs and ensuring its medical soundness – where the vetting or pre-purchase examination becomes crucial.

At Surrey Hills Equine, we provide tailored 2-stage and 5-stage vetting/pre-purchase examination services for horses of all types and abilities. Before conducting the vetting, we will discuss your equine requirements, followed by delivering a comprehensive post-vetting/pre-purchase exam report.

A 5-stage vetting is the most common type of pre-purchase exam. This thoroughly assesses a horse's suitability for a specific purpose.

It begins with a preliminary examination of the heart, eyes, and respiratory system and flexion tests on all four limbs. This is followed by an exercise phase, including trotting on various surfaces, controlled ridden exercise, and strenuous activity to assess cardiovascular health. After a rest period, another trot-up confirms soundness. A blood sample detects any masking substances. Routine blood sampling evaluates overall fitness. The examination concludes with recording markings, microchip, and passport numbers, alongside any noted abnormalities, with an opinion on purchase suitability.

Other Equine Services in Surrey

Our horse vets can provide a complete range of services, including:

Services Treating Lameness

Lameness and poor performance

Lameness issues can inflict pain on your horse and cause concern and disruption for you as an owner. Our goal is to identify the cause of the problem and recommend suitable treatment to get your horse back to normal as quickly as possible.

The lameness investigation may involve various procedures, including the examination of your horse's conformation, movement, stride, and limb placement, flexion tests, palpation of the limbs and muscles, examination at walk and trot in hand and on the lunge, ridden examination, nerve or joint blocks, and X-ray or ultrasound.

Services Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy

Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) is increasingly acknowledged as a common culprit behind various clinical signs, including poor performance, behavioural changes, reduced appetite, lacklustre coat condition, and discomfort during girthing.

All horses face the risk of developing ulcers, with contributing factors such as a high-carbohydrate diet, intense training or competition schedules, and stressors like illness or changes in routine, such as box rest.

Using a gastroscope, we can visually inspect the horse's esophagus, stomach and proximal duodenum to confirm the presence of ulcers. Since ulcer treatment can be costly, a thorough stomach examination through gastroscopy is recommended before initiating any treatment.

Services Diagnostic Imaging

Mobile diagnostic imaging

Surrey Hills Equine employs cutting-edge portable wireless diagnostic imaging tools, including Digital X-ray systems, Ultrasound Scanners, and Video Endoscopy, delivered directly to clients' premises. This innovative approach allows us to provide the convenience of on-site examinations, eliminating the need to transport horses.

Our horse vets may recommend additional diagnostic imaging, whether it is for lameness investigations, pre-purchase examinations (vetting), dental or head-related concerns, or assessments of upper airways for respiratory conditions or Strangles cases.

Services Endoscopy

Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a valuable tool for assessing the respiratory tract, especially in horses facing respiratory issues or exhibiting poor performance.

The procedure involves passing a flexible camera, known as an endoscope, through your horse's nostril, pharynx, larynx, and down the trachea, with the option to examine the guttural pouches.
