Highly recommend Surrey Hills Equine Vets - We moved to Corrado as we wanted the personal touch of the same vet attending each time. Corrado is very thorough, explains things very well and is genuinely interested in how the horses he treats are going. It is very easy to book appointments and the fee structures are clear and fair. The zone day option for teeth and vaccinations keep routine healthcare affordable.

Highly recommend the team at Surrey Hills Equine Vets. Can’t speak highly enough of Corrado. He was great and extremely informative with regard to the horse vetting and X-rays when we spoke over the phone. He was extremely professional and gave a lot of clarity on the day to the unfortunate findings. Would definitely use again.

Our Pepper Harrow horse dentists will look after your horse's oral health

Dental care is key to your horse's overall health and well-being as they get older. For older horses, regular dental care means they can eat without discomfort. For equine athletes, untreated dental problems can affect their response to the bit, their behaviour and ultimately their performance, so regular checks are a must.

Surrey Hills Equine offers a full range of equine dental services. Our team of equine dentists are fully mobile and brings all the necessary equipment to your yard.

Every dental appointment starts with a complete oral examination under light sedation. This means your horse will be calm and relaxed, allowing us to assess every aspect of their dental health. Sedation also makes the procedure safer for your horse and our team.

We complete five-stage pre-purchase examinations in Shackleford, GU8

Our vets have years of experience conducting 5-stage pre-purchase exams (PPEs). This exam can be conducted as a 2- or 5-stage exam. It will provide valuable insight into the horse's health and overall condition.

The 5-stage PPE includes:

  • Stage 1 – Initial Exam: A full physical examination, behavioural observation, verification of passport and microchip details, examination of teeth, eyes, heart and lungs and palpation to detect any abnormalities.
  • Stage 2 – In-Hand Gait Analysis: Walking and trotting the horse in-hand, lunging on hard and soft surfaces where possible to evaluate movement and look for signs of lameness.
  • Stage 3 – Exercise Protocol: Riding the horse in all gaits – walk, trot, canter and gallop – and monitoring for lameness or cardiovascular/respiratory issues.
  • Stage 4 – Recovery and Re-exam: Re-examining the heart and respiratory system during the horse's recovery period after exercise.
  • Stage 5 – Post Exercise Lameness Check: A trot up to see if there are any changes in soundness after the exercise phase.

We recommend the 5-stage PPE for all riding horses. Depending on the value of the horse, insurance requirements, or any specific concerns, we may recommend additional diagnostic tests, such as drug testing, X-rays, ultrasound, or endoscopy, to give you peace of mind.

Other Equine Services in Surrey

Our horse vets can provide a complete range of services, including:

Services Treating Lameness

Lameness and poor performance

Lameness issues can inflict pain on your horse and cause concern and disruption for you as an owner. Our goal is to identify the cause of the problem and recommend suitable treatment to get your horse back to normal as quickly as possible.

The lameness investigation may involve various procedures, including the examination of your horse's conformation, movement, stride, and limb placement, flexion tests, palpation of the limbs and muscles, examination at walk and trot in hand and on the lunge, ridden examination, nerve or joint blocks, and X-ray or ultrasound.

Services Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy

Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) is increasingly acknowledged as a common culprit behind various clinical signs, including poor performance, behavioural changes, reduced appetite, lacklustre coat condition, and discomfort during girthing.

All horses face the risk of developing ulcers, with contributing factors such as a high-carbohydrate diet, intense training or competition schedules, and stressors like illness or changes in routine, such as box rest.

Using a gastroscope, we can visually inspect the horse's esophagus, stomach and proximal duodenum to confirm the presence of ulcers. Since ulcer treatment can be costly, a thorough stomach examination through gastroscopy is recommended before initiating any treatment.

Services Diagnostic Imaging

Mobile diagnostic imaging

Surrey Hills Equine employs cutting-edge portable wireless diagnostic imaging tools, including Digital X-ray systems, Ultrasound Scanners, and Video Endoscopy, delivered directly to clients' premises. This innovative approach allows us to provide the convenience of on-site examinations, eliminating the need to transport horses.

Our horse vets may recommend additional diagnostic imaging, whether it is for lameness investigations, pre-purchase examinations (vetting), dental or head-related concerns, or assessments of upper airways for respiratory conditions or Strangles cases.

Services Endoscopy

Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a valuable tool for assessing the respiratory tract, especially in horses facing respiratory issues or exhibiting poor performance.

The procedure involves passing a flexible camera, known as an endoscope, through your horse's nostril, pharynx, larynx, and down the trachea, with the option to examine the guttural pouches.
