Dental care for horses by Holmbury St Mary equine dentists

Equine dentistry is a critical component of routine equine healthcare, essential for maintaining the overall health of your horses. This is especially important for older horses, as proper dental care supports their well-being throughout their senior years. Regular dental check-ups are crucial for equine athletes to ensure dental issues do not impact their performance.

Surrey Hills Equine offers comprehensive equine dental services, addressing routine maintenance and complex dental issues. Our team brings these services directly to your yard for added convenience.

During these sessions, we conduct a meticulous oral examination under light sedation. This approach ensures a thorough assessment of all aspects of the mouth and teeth while prioritising the safety and comfort of your horse. Sedation is administered for all dental procedures to create a relaxed environment, reducing stress for our clients, patients, and veterinarians. Throughout the process, your horse's head is comfortably supported, allowing us to perform detailed work with minimal stress.
Choose Surrey Hills Equine for expert equine dental care that promotes the health and performance of your horses.

Do you need a five-stage pre-purchase examination in Abinger Common?

Our veterinarians have extensive experience conducting thorough five-stage pre-purchase examinations (PPEs). This comprehensive vetting process, recognised in two or five stages, provides a detailed assessment to help inform your purchasing decision. However, it does not guarantee the horse's suitability for your intended use. Each five-stage PPE follows this format:

Stage 1 – Preliminary Examination: A thorough physical assessment, including behaviour observation, passport verification, dental check, microchip scanning, eye examination, auscultation of heart and lungs, and palpation for abnormalities.

Stage 2 – Walk and Trotting Up In-Hand: Looking at the horse walking, trotting in hand, and lunging on hard and soft surfaces, where possible.

Stage 3 – Exercise Phase: Examining the horse while riding in all gaits, including walking, trot, canter, and gallop. This is done to detect lameness, cardiovascular or respiratory abnormalities, or lameness.

Stage 4 – Rest and Re-examination: Monitoring the horse during recovery to reassess cardiovascular and respiratory parameters.

Stage 5 – Second Trot Up: Repeating the trot-up to assess any changes in soundness after exercise.

Five-stage PPEs are recommended for all riding horses. Drug screen blood sampling is advised, and additional procedures like X-rays, ultrasonography, and endoscopy may be included based on horse value, insurance requirements, or specific concerns.

Our vets recommend that all riding horses have five-stage PPEs. Based on the horse's value, insurance requirements, or specific concerns, we may advise drug screening, blood sampling and additional procedures such as X-rays, ultrasonography, and endoscopy. This thorough vetting process ensures a well-informed decision, providing peace of mind for your investment.

Other Equine Services in Surrey

Our horse vets can provide a complete range of services, including:

Services Treating Lameness

Lameness and poor performance

Lameness issues can inflict pain on your horse and cause concern and disruption for you as an owner. Our goal is to identify the cause of the problem and recommend suitable treatment to get your horse back to normal as quickly as possible.

The lameness investigation may involve various procedures, including the examination of your horse's conformation, movement, stride, and limb placement, flexion tests, palpation of the limbs and muscles, examination at walk and trot in hand and on the lunge, ridden examination, nerve or joint blocks, and X-ray or ultrasound.

Services Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy

Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) is increasingly acknowledged as a common culprit behind various clinical signs, including poor performance, behavioural changes, reduced appetite, lacklustre coat condition, and discomfort during girthing.

All horses face the risk of developing ulcers, with contributing factors such as a high-carbohydrate diet, intense training or competition schedules, and stressors like illness or changes in routine, such as box rest.

Using a gastroscope, we can visually inspect the horse's esophagus, stomach and proximal duodenum to confirm the presence of ulcers. Since ulcer treatment can be costly, a thorough stomach examination through gastroscopy is recommended before initiating any treatment.

Services Diagnostic Imaging

Mobile diagnostic imaging

Surrey Hills Equine employs cutting-edge portable wireless diagnostic imaging tools, including Digital X-ray systems, Ultrasound Scanners, and Video Endoscopy, delivered directly to clients' premises. This innovative approach allows us to provide the convenience of on-site examinations, eliminating the need to transport horses.

Our horse vets may recommend additional diagnostic imaging, whether it is for lameness investigations, pre-purchase examinations (vetting), dental or head-related concerns, or assessments of upper airways for respiratory conditions or Strangles cases.

Services Endoscopy

Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a valuable tool for assessing the respiratory tract, especially in horses facing respiratory issues or exhibiting poor performance.

The procedure involves passing a flexible camera, known as an endoscope, through your horse's nostril, pharynx, larynx, and down the trachea, with the option to examine the guttural pouches.
